Say "Boo!" to the Flu - 2008 Program a Success!

Families Fighting Flu, Visiting Nurse Associations of America and The Clorox Company teamed up for the Say "Boo!" to the Flu program, a national campaign to increase the number of families vaccinated nationwide and educate them on other simple prevention tricks – like hand washing and disinfecting germ hot spots – to help families have a healthier flu season.

A Great Success:

2008 Say "Boo!" to the Flu tour! It was a great success! Say "Boo" to the Flu events kicked off across the country in October 2008, providing parents with the opportunity to get their family vaccinated, before flu season peaked. Families learned tricks to help prevent exposure to the flu virus all season.

This year, the cross-country tour traveled from coast-to-coast, hosting 12 events from Sept. 27 - Oct. 31, from Atlanta to San Francisco. Nurses from VNAs across the country vaccinated more than 6,233 people this year (and counting!) - almost twice as many as last year.

Hardworking VNAs were also able to reach many local politicians this year. Mayors declared a Say "Boo!" to the Flu day in nine cities across America - Atlanta, Ga.; Bloomington, Minn.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; County of St. Louis, Mo.; Farmington Hills, Mich.; Houston, Texas; Indianapolis, Ind.; San Francisco, Calif.; and Washington, DC.

For the first time ever, the Say "Boo!" to the Flu program expanded its reach by creating events beyond the tour cities. This year, Say "Boo!" to the Flu offered "turnkey kits" to other VNA agencies across the country to help them host their own "Boo!" events. More than 2,850 flu vaccinations were administered as part of the turnkey kit program.

New 2008 CDC Recommendations
In February 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded the flu vaccination recommendations to include all children from 6 months through 18 years old. In addition, household contacts (moms, dads, brothers, sisters, nannies, etc.) of children younger than six months old should be vaccinated because while children younger than six months cannot be given the flu vaccine, they are the pediatric group at highest risk of flu complications.

The site offers free, interactive tools and games to help parents teach their children about flu prevention. At the site, parents can also find a flu vaccination event in their area, or even track the status of flu outbreaks in their town.
