WASHINGTON, DC - May 1, 2010 - Join the Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA) and hundreds of organizations across the country in celebrating National Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Week, May 10-16, 2010, by recognizing the importance of visiting nurse agencies and home healthcare providers who deliver high quality, affordable care to elderly and disabled patients in the home and community setting. Regardless of where they work, either at a traditional VNA, another nonprofit agency, or even a for-profit agency, home healthcare nurses embrace the single most important principle promoted during national VNA Week: compassionate, patient-centered care for all patients.

"VNA Week offers an opportunity to honor and celebrate the leading role that VNAs and other nonprofit home healthcare agencies have played in establishing home health's role in the first place and helping to keep it viable during recent years of reimbursement changes and rapidly shifting expectations for all of healthcare," said Andy Carter, VNAA President and CEO.

The second week of May has been set aside as a special time for expressing our appreciation to thousands of home healthcare clinicians and homecare providers who tirelessly care for millions of patients across the country. Join VNAA and Visiting Nurse Agencies across the country in saying thank you to the visiting nurses and home health providers in your life for the compassionate care they provided.

A few ways you can celebrate National VNA Week in your community, include:

  • Spotlight a visiting nurse in your community each day this week in a community newspaper, newsletter, Website, online or social networking sites.
  • Talk to patients who have benefited from a VNA.
  • Learn more about the services VNAs provide, especially the nonprofit associations, as they provide services to all regardless of the patients ability to pay.
  • Send cards or thank you letters to the visiting nurses in your community.
  • Donate to a local nonprofit VNA in your community.
